We Bought Our Dream Home: a 1915 Greek Revival House Recognized by the Texas Historical Society
In the brisk winter of January, 2022, our family story began in the small town of Springtown, Texas. We found ourselves in love with a 1915 Greek Revival home, a historical gem that we were fortunate enough to call our own. Our antique house is a variation of the four-square construction; it was not only the home we had dreamed about, but also a source of inspiration that led us to discover a new passion for restoring woodwork and establish a family business. A testament to its architectural and historical significance, the house is recognized by the Texas Historical Commission.
A Family Business with a Love of History
The house, originally built by Dr. George Martin Jones and his wife, Ruth, changed hands after they passed away. Dr. Jones was a doctor who not only saw patients in the local hospital, but also had his medical practice right here in our home. Being a family business driven by a love for history, we feel a deep connection to their story. Having grown up in a 1896 Victorian-style home myself, I have always pined for a historic home of my own.
Maintaining and Rehabilitating Woodwork
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of our Greek Revival home is the ornate woodwork that adorns it. We quickly realized that maintaining the integrity of this house would involve recreating and rehabilitating the woodwork. Upon discovering that the corner brackets were long ago weather-rotted, we seized the moment to transform our love for history and craftsmanship into a hobby – woodworking. Not original to the house anyway, we removed the badly damaged Edwardian-style screen brackets, and exchanged them for the Art Deco brackets.
Preserving the Historical Beauty of Our Home
Using an original vintage corner bracket as a model, we set out to recreate the screen bracket frames that we wanted to achieve. You can see our brackets right here. The process was not just a craft but a journey to breathe new life into our home.
The problem? We couldn't find the screen brackets anywhere, so my husband started making them by hand himself. This hands-on experience sparked a realization in us - there was a community of homeowners looking to preserve the historical beauty of their houses, much like us.
